Everybody has heard the commandment, “Thou shall drink 8 glasses of water a day,” or some variant of the highly promoted suggestion.
It’s not a bad start, but water intake should be taken seriously and should not be limited to a set number of glasses per day (how big are these recommended “glasses” anyway?). Instead, each one of us should consume enough water to keep us hydrated, and because we’re all different, that number could vary and exceed the recommended 8 glasses.
The causes of dehydration could be many, but certainly include such things as illness in the body or decreased kidney function. Vomiting and diarrhea, for example, could have a significant impact on hydration levels. Besides illness or other irregularities, as we age, our sense of thirst itself becomes less acute, making it harder to sense with certainty that our body needs water. This is one reason why it’s important to monitor intake and make ourselves down a glass or two regularly throughout the day. Another cause of dehydration could be medicine – some meds are diuretic or make a person sweat more. Yet another reason why it’s important to take in fluids, especially water, regularly.
The effects of dehydration on the body could be severe. This incomplete list includes such effects as:
Low blood pressure
Increased heart rate
Check your fluid and water intake – are you drinking enough water? Drink water regularly throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. This simple precaution could save you the headache (literally) of a trip to the doctor.
